Bare-root planting
4 steps
How to do it
- 1Plant as soon as possible after the plant arrives, while dormant and the roots are cool and undamaged — soak roots in water for an hour or two beforehand if they look dry.
- 2Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots out fully without bending or cramming them.
- 3Plant at the same depth as the soil mark visible on the stem from the nursery.
- 4Firm in well and water thoroughly, even in wet weather, to settle soil around the roots.
COMMON MISTAKE
Letting bare-root plants sit around in a shed or garage for days before planting — the exposed roots dry out and lose vigour quickly once out of the ground.
