How to do it

1. 1Identify which plants genuinely need to come inside (check the hardiness rating) before the first frost, rather than waiting to see what happens.
2. 2Cut back, check for pests, and pot up any plants being lifted from open ground.
3. 3Store in a frost-free, bright or dim space depending on the plant — dormant tubers can go somewhere dark, but leafy plants need light.
4. 4Water sparingly through winter — most dormant or slow-growing plants need much less than in summer.
