Pruning roses (by group)

How to do it

1. 1Bush roses (hybrid tea/floribunda): hard prune in late winter to an outward-facing bud, around knee height.
2. 2Climbing roses: shorten flowered side-shoots to two or three buds, and tie in new main stems horizontally.
3. 3Ramblers: prune immediately after flowering, cutting flowered stems hard and tying in vigorous new growth.
4. 4Patio/miniature roses: a light tidy prune to shape is usually all that's needed.
5. 5On any type, always remove dead, damaged or diseased wood and crossing stems first.
