How to do it

1. 1Best done in the plant's dormant season for hardy perennials — autumn or early spring.
2. 2Lift the whole clump and pull or cut it into sections, each with healthy roots and at least one strong shoot or bud.
3. 3Discard the old, woody or hollow centre of an overgrown clump, replanting only the vigorous outer sections.
4. 4Replant promptly and water in well.
